Food Programs Manager - Washington County

Healthy Acadia, a community health coalition serving Maine’s Hancock & Washington counties, seeks an experienced Food Programs Manager to join a dynamic team passionate about making it easier for all people to lead healthy lives and eat healthy food. Reporting to the Community Health and Food Programs Director, the Washington County Food Programs Manager provides leadership in all areas related to community food security including gleaning, community gardening, supporting farms and farmers’ markets, and working closely with food security organizations. Extensive community collaboration and partner interface is anticipated to achieve lasting improvements in organizational and community policies, practices, programs and systems. We are hiring a full-time manager to serve community members, partners, food security organizations, and others across Washington County. This is not a remote position. 

Program Area Responsibilities: 

  • Provide community members experiencing lower income of all ages access to fresh and affordable food. 
  • Manage the Downeast Gleaning Initiative in Washington County. 
  • Oversee and manage the Downeast Restorative Harvest program, a community farm in partnership with the Washington County Jail and the Maine Department of Corrections and other partners and volunteers. 
  • Participate in national and statewide efforts as appropriate, including food systems networks and conferences (e.g. Maine Gleaning Network, Maine Network of Community Food Councils, Association of Gleaning Organizations, Maine Food Convergence, and more) as well as state government-supported initiatives (e.g. Ending Hunger in Maine by 2030, Maine Senior Farm Share, etc). 
  • Supervise the Washington County Food Programs Coordinator, interns, and AmeriCorps VISTA members and provide support and collaboration for the following programs: Washington County Food Pantry Network, annual Turkey-A-Thon Fundraiser, Machias-Area Community Supper, Maine Senior FarmShare, WIC Produce Shares, and more. 
  • Maintain high-level partnerships with local and statewide organizations, State of Maine partners, funders, volunteers, and others, and represent Healthy Acadia’s Food Programs in Washington County broadly. 

Qualifications and Experience Sought: 

  • Strong experience engaging with food systems. 
  • Strong experience with grant writing and fundraising. 
  • Organic vegetable farming experience (ex. crop planning, soil health and fertility, organic pest control.) 
  • Experience in educational settings, and/or curriculum development. 
  • Experience working with individuals experiencing lower income. 
  • Understanding of emergency and correctional food systems, and federal & state nutrition benefits.
  • Excellent computer skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally and accurately, within deadlines. 
  • Highly organized and able to manage staff/interns, multiple assignments and priorities. 
  • Team player with a high professional standard, positive attitude, and flexibility. 
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant experience. 
  • Degree in public health, food systems, or related fields, or equivalent life experience preferred. 

This is a 40-hour/week position with competitive salary & benefits. Salary range $48,000-$55,000. Frequent travel throughout Washington County is required with reimbursement for mileage.
